{"id":408,"date":"2019-01-04T17:46:42","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T17:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/?p=408"},"modified":"2024-05-09T16:36:32","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T16:36:32","slug":"clan-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/04\/clan-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Clan Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-409 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantmap-243x300.png\" alt=\"Clan Grant Scottish Map\" width=\"182\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantmap-243x300.png 243w, http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantmap-768x949.png 768w, http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantmap-828x1024.png 828w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 182px) 100vw, 182px\" \/>Clan Grant is a highland Scottish clan originating in the Strathspey area of Scotland.\u00a0 It is believed that the Grant family emigrated to England with the Normans during the invasion of 1066.\u00a0 The first mention of the Grant surname in Scotland is in the 13th century upon their acquisition of lands at Straterrick.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-411 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantcrest-213x300.png\" alt=\"Clan Grant Crest\" width=\"125\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantcrest-213x300.png 213w, http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantcrest-768x1083.png 768w, http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantcrest-726x1024.png 726w, http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/grantcrest.png 975w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/>The historic seat of the clan is <a href=\"https:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/18\/castle-grant\/\">Castle Grant<\/a>, located in Grantown-on-Spey.\u00a0 The castle was originally built by <a href=\"https:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/10\/clan-cumming-clan-comyn\/\">Clan Comyn<\/a> but was taken by the Grants in the 15th century.\u00a0 The Grant family lived in the castle until the 1950\u2019s and it was eventually sold in the 1970\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Clan Grant\u2019s motto is \u201cstand fast, stand sure\u201d, and, the crest features an image of a burning hill.\u00a0 The hill represents the summit of Crig Elachie where clan members would gather to prepare for battle.<\/p>\n<p>The Grant clan was one of the highland clans that were not seriously affected by the Highland Clearances, then chief, The \u201cGood Sir James\u201d Grant provided housing, schools, mills, hospitals and factories in an effort to keep his clansmen from leaving.\u00a0 His loyalty has been celebrated by the members of the clan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-413\" style=\"width: 142px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-413\" src=\"https:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/crantgranttartan-142x300.png\" alt=\"Clan Grant Tartan\" width=\"142\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/crantgranttartan-142x300.png 142w, http:\/\/bagtownclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/crantgranttartan.png 407w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clan Grant Tartan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clangrant.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clan Grant Society<\/a> was formed in Glasgow Scotland in 1890 and was expanded when many regional societies joined to create a joint society.\u00a0 Interest in Clan Grant revived after World War Two for the March of the Clans in Edinburgh taking place in 1951.\u00a0 The society was again revived in 1981 with the present society being formed by the 32nd clan chief.\u00a0 The home of the society is located at the old Duthil Church, in Grantow-on-Spey, where many Grant artifacts can be viewed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Septs. and Dependents &#8211;\u00a0Gilroy, MacGilroy.
