Clan Armstrong is considered an Armigerous clan because it currently does not have a chief recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. The name Armstrong is common through out Northumbria and the Scottish borders.
Siward Beorn or Sword Warrior, by legend, is considered to be the first of the Armstrong Clan. He was said to be the nephew of King Canute who ran England until 1035.
The Armstrong crest is represented by an arm from the shoulder, armed, proper.
The Armstrong motto is Invictus Maneo which means I remain unvanquished.
The clan Armstrong originates in the Scottish Boarder region with its district in Liddesdale.
The Armstrong clan was a very powerful and influential clan in the border regions from the 13th century till the 17th century. They were said to be, as powerful as any two other clans combined. They were often targeted by the king of England during that time because they were viewed as a significant threat in that region.
Clan Armstrong’s last chief was Archibald Armstrong of Magerton. He was hung in 1610 during the king of England during the king’s quest to pacify the borders. During that time many of the Armstrong clan were also deported to Ireland.

The Armstrongs built Gilnockie stone Tower in the early 16th century to protect their lands around the Esk river. Gilnockie tower still exists today and houses the Armstrong Clan centre.
Neil Armstrong visited Gilnockie Tower a few years after landing on the moon. The centre has a small exhibition celebrating his achievement.
