Clan Munro
Clan Munro is a highland Scottish Clan located in the Easter-Ross District of Scotland. According to legend, the clan originated in the River Roe area in Ireland. It is believed that in the 11th century, the Munro’s were Irish mercenary soldiers that were granted land by the King after they help defeat the Viking invaders in that region.
The first documented chief of Clan Munro was Robert de Munro from the 14th century.
The clan Motto is Dread God and its crest badge features an eagle perching, proper.
In the mid 13th century members of the clan Munro rescued the Earl of Rosses son William from abduction. The Munro’s were reward with land and this cemented a strong relationship between the two clans.
The Munro’s historic seat is Foulis Castle, located in Evanton, Scotland and has been held by the Munro
family since the twelfth century. The castle was intact up until the 18th century when it was attacked and burned to the grown by a Jacobite army. The house was rebuilt beginning in 1745 by the chief Sir Harry Munro, however the original appearance of the castle has been lost to history.
Early on in the protestant reformation the clan chief and the majority of the Munro clan adopted the new church. The Munro clan was very loyal to the British Crown and fought against many of the highland clans during the Jacobite uprising in the 18th century.
The Clan Munro Association was founded in 1937 by the clan chief, at the time. Captain Donald Munro. Branches of the clan Munro have been established in the United States of America, New Zealand, France, Canada and Australia.
