Clan Brodie’s origins are unknown, due to the fact, that their early records were destroyed when Lewis Gordon, the 3rd Marquess of Huntly, burnt down Brodie Castle in the 17th century. It is hypothesized that they were an important Pictish family and were linked to the Pictish Kings who ruled areas of Scotland until the 10th century.
The Brodie clan has traditionally lived between Morayshire and Nairnshire which sits on the border between the highlands and Moray. Brodie’s historic seat is Brodie Castle, located near Forres in Moray Scotland.
The Motto of Clan Brodie is Unite, and, the crest features a hand holding a bunch of arrows.
It is believed that the family acquired much of its land in the 12th century as a gift from King Malcolm IV. The first recorded mention of the Brodie Clan came in 1311 when Robert the Bruce granted a charter on Michael de Brothie, making him a baron and recognizing the linage of the Brodie family.
Castle Brodie was built on their lands in 1567. The Castle was home to the Brodie family until the late 20th century. The National Trust now owns and controls the castle. The castle has been restored, and houses many historical artifacts, collected by the Brodies, that can be viewed on a tour of the castle.
The clan Brodie of the Americas Society was constituted in 2005 and has been recognized by the chief to be the official group of the Clan. The organization focuses on gathering historical documents, tracing family trees, participating in Celtic events and providing educational opportunities.
