Clan Macpherson is a highland Scottish clan. The surname Macpherson means son of the parson. It is believed that the founder of the clan was a man named Muireach who was the priest of Kingussie in the 12th century. According to legend the clan acquired their lands in 1309 after supporting Robert the Bruce.
The clan’s motto is “Touch not the cat but a glove”, and, the clan’s crest features a sitting wildcat with its paw extended.
The historic seat of clan Macpherson is Cluny Castle located in Laggan. The castle was destroyed by the crown in 1746 after the Jacobite defeat at the Battle of Culloden. The castle remained their seat until 1930. Newton castle in Blairowrie is the present seat of the clan.
The Macpherson clan is a member of the Chattan confederation or Clan Chattan. This is an organization, founded in the 17th century, that unites twelve separate clans under a superior chief, for the purpose of mutual solidarity and protection.
