Clan Mackintosh/Clan MacIntosh
Clan Mackintosh is a highland Scottish Clan originating in the Inverness district of Scotland. According to clan history the first chief of clan Mackintosh was a man name Shaw MacDuff, the second son of the Earl of Fife. It was said that in 1163 Shaw helped Malcolm IV of Scotland defeat a rebellion and was granted land in the Findhorn valley as a reward for his service.
The Motto of the clan is “Touch not the cat bot a glove”, and, the clan’s crest features a wildcat on its hind legs guardant.
The historic seat of Clan Mackintosh is Moy Castle, located on Moy Island. The land on Moy Island has been held by the Mackintoshes since the 13th century. The original structure on the island was destroyed in the 15th century by the Earl of Huntly. The castle was rebuilt in 1665 by Lachlan Mackintosh only to be destroyed in 1689 after a Jocobite uprising. The island was abandoned and the Mackintosh’s moved their seat to Moy Hall located in the Village of Moy, Inverness.
The Mackintosh clan is a member of the Chattan confederation or Clan Chattan. This is an organization, founded in the 17th century that unites twelve separate clans under a superior chief, for the purpose of mutual solidarity and protection. The chiefs of clan Chattan are traditionally from the Mackintosh Clan.
The Clan Mackintosh Association of North America was founded in 1981 with the amalgamation of small Mackintosh clan societies. The organization has been sanctioned by the clan chief as the official organization of the clan.
