Clan MacThomas
Clan MacThomas is a highland Scottish clan originating in the Perthshire district of Scotland. The Clan’s first leader was Tomaidh Mor, the grandson of William Mackintosh, the 7th chief of Clan Mackintosh. According to legend, in the 15th century, Thomas re-settled with a group from Badenoch to Glenshee.
The clan’s motto is Deo juvante invidiam superabo, which means, God help overcome envy. The clan’s crest features a mountain cat guardant grasping a serpent in its paw.
The original seat of Clan MacThomas was located at Thom, across the river from Glenshee, Scotland. After the murder of the 4th chief of MacThomas the seat moved to Finegand, Scotland.
The MacThomas clan is a member of the Chattan confederation or Clan Chattan. This is an organization, founded in the 17th century that unites twelve separate clans under a superior chief, for the purpose of mutual solidarity and protection.
The Clan MacThomas Society was formed in 1954 by the 18th clan chief. The clan gathers each year at Clach Na Coileach in Glenshee, this is held on the 4th Saturday in August. The clan society currently has branches in Europe, Australia and North America.
