Clan MacFarlane
Clan MacFarlane is a highland Scottish Clan originating in the Argyll district of Scotland. It is believed that the clan is descendant from the Earls of Lennox, who ruled the Lennox district of Scotland in the middle ages. Clan MacFarlane is considered an armigerous clan since they currently do not have a clan chief.
The motto of the clan is This I’ll defend. The clan crest features a savage holding a sword in the right hand and pointing to a crown with the left.
The historic seat of the clan is Arrochar within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The clan controlled this land for nearly five centuries. In 1886 the direct male line of the clan died with out a successor and the lands were sold off.
The Clan MacFarlane Heritage Centre located in an old church near Loch Lomond. The centre includes a museum dedicated to the clan and highland life, a craft shop and a tartan centre. Next to the centre is the churchyard that contains the graves of the MacFarlane chiefs.
The Clan MacFarlane Society was established in 1911 in Glasgow, Scotland. The Society died out after the First World War but was reestablished in 1973. The Society now claims members from all around the world.
