Clan Pringle
Clan Pringle is a lowland Scottish Clan originating in the border region of Scotland. It is believed that the clan dates back to the mid 13th century during the reign of King Alexander III of Scots. The name itself is derived from the place name Hoppringle Hill, located in the Parish of Stow. The first evidence of the Pringle family dates back to 1296 when Elias De Hoppringill attached his seal to the Ragman Roll.
The motto of the clan is Amiciatia Reddit Honores, which means Friendship Gives Honour, and the clan crest features a scallop shell.
The historic seat of the clan is Hoppringle Castle. The castle is no longer standing, the privately owned Hoppringle farmhouse is now situated in its place. A 1.2m thick section of the castle wall is built into the farms stable. The current seat of the clan is Torsonce house, located a half-mile southwest of Stow and on the right bank of the Gala Water, the mansion was built in 1862. It was destroyed by fire in 1992 and completely rebuilt.
The last chief of the Pringle Clan was John Hoppringle who died in 1737 with no male heir. Members of the Pringle Clan Association are actively trying to trace a rightful clan chief.
The Clan Pringle Association was founded at Pewterers’ Hall in London on the 3rd of October, 2012. The organization was formed to preserve the Pringle family’s traditions, sites, artifacts and records and to study its history and culture.
