Clan Duncan
Clan Duncan is a lowland Scottish clan originating in the Angus region of Scotland. The surname Duncan is considered to be one of the oldest surnames in Scotland. It is believed to be derived from the Gaelic name Donnachadh which translates into brown haired chief. Legend states that both the Duncan and the Robertson Clans descended from the 4th chief of the Donnachadh clan. The Duncan’s of Lundie held significant property in Forfarshire.
The clan motto is Disce pati which translates into “Learn to suffer”, and the clan’s crest features a ship under full sail upon the waves.
The historic seat of the clan is Lundie Castle located near Coupar Angus. The castle was built in the 16th century and held by the Duncans. The castle no longer exists, it was demolished and replaced with a house in the 17th century.
Clan Duncan is presently an armigerous clan and is currently led by the House of Duncan of Sketraw. The last chief of the clan is believed to have been from the 15th century. The clan society and the Lord Lyon are hoping to identify and recognize a chief through genealogy.
The Clan Duncan society was formed in 2005 with the purpose of uniting all those with the surname Duncan or variant spellings. The society provides opportunities for members to advance research into their genealogy.
