Carlaverock Castle
Caerlaverock Castle is a medieval castle located in Scotland. It was first built in the 13th century by the Maxwell family, who were wardens of the west march and controlled trade in the area. The castle has a triangular shape and has undergone several reconstructions and partial demolitions over the centuries. It was abandoned in the 17th century, after being besieged during the Wars of Scottish Independence. In the 17th century, the Maxwell family built a new lodging within the walls, which is considered to be some of the earliest classical domestic architecture in Scotland. Caerlaverock Castle is now protected as a scheduled monument and is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. It is a popular tourist attraction and is located within the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve.
