Newark Castle
Newark Castle is a castle located in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, Scotland. It was originally built in 1478 by George Maxwell as a tower house within a walled enclosure or barmkin. In the late 16th century, the castle was inherited by Sir Patrick Maxwell, who expanded the building and converted the north east tower into a doocot. The expansion included the construction of a three-storey Renaissance mansion with features of the Scottish baronial style, including crow-stepped gables and corbelled turrets. In 1668, the Glasgow authorities purchased land around the castle and developed the area into the Port Glasgow harbor. Throughout its history, the castle has had a series of non-resident owners and has been used for various purposes, including as a ropemaker’s workshop and as a storage facility for wild animals.
