Niddry Castle
Niddry Castle is a sixteenth-century tower house located near Winchburgh, West Lothian, Scotland. It was built around 1500 by the Lord Seton, and served as a residence for Mary, Queen of Scots in 1568 after her escape from Loch Leven Castle. During the civil war in Scotland in 1572, Niddry Castle was twice attacked and defended by the garrison led by Captain Scougall. In the seventeenth century, the castle passed to the Hope family, who were granted the title Baron Niddry in 1814. The castle was restored in the 1990s and upgraded to an A Listing. It features a four-storey L-shaped tower with a corbelled parapet and a turret in the angle of the “L”, and a basement that is vaulted. The hall was located on the first floor.
