Ravenscraig Castle
Ravenscraig Castle is a ruined castle located in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. It was built in the 1460s and is considered one of the first castles in Scotland to be designed to withstand cannon fire and provide artillery defense. It was originally constructed by King James II for his wife, Mary of Guelders, as a memorial to him and as a dower house. After Mary’s death in 1463, the castle was completed by the Sinclair family, who also had an interest in artillery fortifications. It was later damaged during the English invasion of Scotland in the 1650s and used as an ammunition depot during World War I. In 1929, the castle was given to the town of Kirkcaldy as a public park and has been managed by Historic Environment Scotland since 1971. It is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
