Tolquhon Castle

Tolquhon Castle, Scotland
Tolquhon Castle, Scotland

Tolquhon Castle is a ruined castle located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was originally a tower house called Preston’s Tower, which was constructed in the early 15th century. It was later extended by William Forbes, the 7th Laird of Tolquhon, in the late 16th century. The castle was designed for show rather than defence, and was built in the Scottish Renaissance style by the mason-architect Thomas Leper. It features an elaborate gatehouse, a first-floor gallery, and triple shot-holes flanking the main entrance. The main hall is decorated with stone tilework. After the death of William Forbes, his descendants continued to occupy the castle until they were forced to move out due to debts in 1718. The castle subsequently fell into disrepair and is now a ruin in the care of Historic Scotland, open to the public. It is also a scheduled monument.
