The White Banner of the Clan Mackay
The White Banner or ‘Bratach Bhan‘ is an important relic of the Clan Mackay. It is believed to have been presented to Mackays by King Alexander III of Scotland as a reward for their loyalty and service, and is made of silk with the Mackay crest and the words “Manu Forti“ (“with a strong hand“). The banner has been lost for centuries, but is still a symbol of the Mackay clan and its image is used at events and gatherings of the Mackay clan. The banner is said to have been carried at the Battle of Druim na Coup near Tongue in Sutherland in 1433 when Ian Abrach, the illegitimate son of Angus Dhu, led a charge against the Sutherlands. It is a symbol of the Mackay‘s loyalty, courage, and strength, and serves to remind modern Mackays of their heritage and their commitment to uphold the values of their ancestors. The banner is a reminder of the Mackays‘ past, and a symbol of unity for the clan.
