Garth Castle
Garth Castle is a 14th-century castle located in Glen Lyon, Scotland. It was built in 1384 by Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan, and was a stronghold for the Stewart kings for over a century. However, in 1653, the castle was occupied by Royalist Colonel Henry Wogan during the Glencairn’s rising against Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate. The castle was put under siege and was ultimately destroyed, leaving it in ruins for over 300 years. In 1880, the lands and estate were purchased by Scottish ship magnate Donald Currie, who partially restored the castle. The castle was later purchased in the 1960s by a Mr Fry, who had it restored as a holiday home. It is a square tower, or “donjon” (keep), with walls made of unhewn boulders and quarried stones, ranging in thickness from 2.0 to 3.7 meters.
