Menzies Castle
Castle Menzies is a 16th-century Z-plan castle located in Scotland, near the village of Weem. It has been the ancestral seat of the Menzies Clan for over 500 years. The castle has been involved in the turbulent history of the Highlands, with Bonnie Prince Charlie resting there for two nights on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The castle has also been owned by various notable figures, such as Duleep Singh, the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire, and Sir Robert Menzies, 7th Baronet. In 1913, the contents of the castle were auctioned and in 1914, the papers were sold at Sotheby’s. The castle and the 11,600 acres of estate land were sold in 1918 for £69,000. The Menzies Clan Society later restored the castle, which is now a Category A listed building and is an example of architectural transition between earlier fortresses and later lightly defensible ‘châteaux’.
