Gordon Castle
Gordon Castle, located near Fochabers in Moray, Scotland, is a historic castle that was the seat of the powerful Gordon clan and the dukes of Gordon. The original castle was built by George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly in the 1470s and enlarged by his grandson and George Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly. In the 1720s, Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon, a prominent member of the Gordon clan, undertook a substantial extension of the castle. In 1769, John Baxter, an Edinburgh architect, was commissioned to rebuild the castle for Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon. The castle was later redesigned by Archibald Simpson in 1827. At its peak, the main facade was 568 feet (173 metres) long. In 1938, the castle’s contents were sold and by 1952, the castle was infested with dry rot. Most of the castle was demolished, but the 16th-century tower of Bog-of-Gight and one of the wings survive.
