Airth Castle

Airth Castle, Scotland
Airth Castle, Scotland

Airth Castle is a castle located in Scotland that has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. According to an account attributed to Blind Harry, William Wallace attacked a previous wooden fortification on this site to rescue his imprisoned uncle. A later castle was destroyed after the defeat of King James III at Sauchieburn in 1488. The southwest tower is the earliest part, dating to the period immediately thereafter. It was owned by Falcones and Mary Bruce, a daughter of the laird of Airth, was a companion of Mary, Queen of Scots in England. The castle is now operating as a hotel and spa. It has been designated as a Category A listed building by Historic Environment Scotland. The castle also has a variety of ghostlore stories associated with it, including sightings of a nanny with two young children who are said to have died in a fire at the castle, the sound of children playing heard in certain rooms, and a ghost dog with a predilection for biting ankles.
