Makerstoun House

Makerstoun House is a square three-storey building situated on the north bank of the Tweed River in southern Scotland. The house was built on the foundations of a medieval keep that was destroyed in 1545 and rebuilt as a mansion in 1590. The house was extended in the 18th century by architect William Adam, and further additions were made in 1828. The house was rebuilt after a fire in 1973 using Adam’s plans, but without the castellations. The house and grounds contain a number of 18th and 19th century monuments, and the burial ground of the Macdougall family is situated nearby. The current owner of Makerstoun House is Lord Biddulph.
