Skipness Castle
Skipness Castle has a rich and varied history, having been built by the Clan MacSween in the early 13th century, and then modified and added to over the centuries. The castle was occupied by royal troops in 1494 during King James IV’s suppression of the Isles and was granted to Archibald Campbell in 1511. During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the castle was besieged by forces under the command of Alasdair Mac Colla, with tragic consequences for one of Mac Colla’s brothers.
Despite being abandoned in the 17th century, the castle has remained a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. It is also said to be haunted by the Green Lady, making it a popular destination for those interested in paranormal activity. The castle and its surrounding area are now protected as a scheduled ancient monument, ensuring that this important piece of Scottish history will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.
