Dunvegan Castle

Dunvegan Castle, Scotland
Dunvegan Castle, Scotland

Dunvegan Castle is a magnificent fortress located on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of Scotland. It is the seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, chief of the Clan MacLeod, and a testament to the rich history and culture of Scotland. This castle has stood the test of time, and its walls hold within them a story that spans over 700 years.

The history of Dunvegan Castle can be traced back to the 13th century, when a promontory was enclosed by a curtain wall. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone various additions and renovations, the most significant of which took place in the 19th century when the whole castle was remodeled in a mock-medieval style. The castle’s present appearance dates back to around 1840, when the process of “baronialization” was completed, giving it the charming and impressive look that it has today.

Dunvegan Castle is built on an elevated rock overlooking an inlet on the eastern shore of Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch. The castle occupies the summit of a rock that is about 50 feet above sea level and is surrounded by a partly natural ditch. The castle is comprised of a four-storey tower house built in the late 14th century, the Fairy Tower, built around 1500 by Alasdair Crotach, the 8th chief, and new ranges of buildings put up between the old tower and the Fairy Tower during the 17th century.

The interior of the castle is just as stunning as the exterior, with elegant furnishings and beautiful antiques. Visitors can see the state apartments built in 1623 by Ruaraidh Mor and the historic rooms, including the MacLeod Room, which is home to the MacLeod tartan and many other family artifacts. The castle also has a chapel and a kitchen that was once used by the castle’s residents.

Dunvegan Castle is a Category A listed building, meaning that it is of national or international importance, and is protected by law. Visitors can take guided tours of the castle and its grounds, and learn about its history, as well as the history of the Clan MacLeod and the Isle of Skye.
