The Abernethy family is believed to have originated from the Caledonian Welsh or Brytons and the name of the clan is of non-Gaelic Pictish origin. The name Abernethy is thought to have come from the Welsh word “Aber,” which means estuary or confluence of rivers. The family settled at Abernethy, Perth and Kinross, and the name of the parish of Abernethy refers to a former Pictish royal residence and an early Christian settlement.
The Abernethy family rose to prominence in Scotland during the 13th century. Sir William de Abernethy was implicated in the murder of Duncan, Earl of Fife in 1288 and was condemned to die in prison. Despite this setback, the fortunes of the family did not suffer greatly and William de Abernethy, called Lord Saltoun, affixed his seal to the declaration of Arbroath in 1320. David II added to the family holdings the lands of Rothiemay and Margaret, heiress of the last Abernethy Lord Saltoun, married Sir Alexander Fraser of Philorth. The Abernethy family has a distinctive crest and coat of arms that are now quartered with those of Fraser in the achievement of the current chief of the Fraser family, Lady Saltoun. Nisbet gives the principal cadet to be Abernethy of Auchnacloich, who used the arms of Abernethy differenced by a border. In addition to its historical significance, the Abernethy family has produced several famous individuals. A distinguished physician named Abernethy is credited with assisting in the discovery of fulminate of mercury, which contributed to the development of modern handguns. The legacy of Clan Abernethy continues to this day, with many members of the family still proudly bearing the Abernethy surname. The clan is remembered for its rich history, powerful family members, and unique crest and coat of arms. The Abernethy family will always be remembered as a significant part of Scotland’s history and heritage. |
