Scott visited the castle often and even painted a series of murals on the staircase, illustrating James I’s poem “The Kingis Quair.” Other Pre-Raphaelite artists and writers, including Christina Rossetti, also visited Penkill Castle, and Rossetti wrote of it, “Even Naples in imagination cannot efface the quiet fertile comeliness of Penkill in reality.”

The castle has changed hands several times over the years, but it remains in private ownership to this day.
