The Bisset family, also known as Clan Bisset, has a rich and fascinating history dating back to the 12th century. The family is said to have Norman origins and arrived in Scotland with King William the Lion in 1174. They were part of a group of young noblemen seeking their fortune in Scotland and quickly established themselves as a prominent and powerful family. | |

In the centuries that followed, the Bissets gained lands in Morayshire and were witnesses to several important charters. They rose to power and prestige, but their fortunes were eclipsed by an act of personal vengeance. In 1242, at a tournament held in Haddington, Walter Byset, Lord of Aboyne, was defeated by the Earl of Atholl. In a fit of anger, Byset is said to have murdered the earl and set fire to his house to conceal the crime. He and his nephew John fled to Ireland and later to England.
Despite the setback, the Bisset family continued to thrive and their name remains prominent to this day. The principal line of the family is now held by Lessendrum, one of the oldest families in Aberdeenshire. The Bisset name still flourishes in Moray and Aberdeenshire, and has produced several prominent lawyers over the years. One of the most notable members of Clan Bisset was Habakkuk Bisset, a writer to the Signet during the reign of James IV. Another was Peter Bisset, a Professor of Canon Law at the University of Bologna in Italy. These individuals demonstrate the intelligence and scholarly achievements that have been a hallmark of the Bisset family for centuries. |
