The origin of Clan Blair is uncertain, but it is believed that they were of Norman origin. They were known for their martial prowess, and as a result, they gained considerable lands and influence. Over time, the family continued to grow in prominence and made strategic alliances by marriage with other powerful families such as the Kennedys, Montgomerys, and Cochranes.

One of the most notable members of Clan Blair was Sir Bryce Blair of Blair, who was executed by the English at Ayr in 1296. His nephew and heir, Roger de Blair, was a comrade-in-arms of Robert the Bruce and received royal favor after the victory of Bannockburn in 1314. This connection to Robert the Bruce, one of Scotland’s greatest heroes, only added to the prestige and influence of Clan Blair.

Clan Blair had a significant presence in both Ayrshire and Perthshire. In Ayrshire, Madeleine Blair of Blair married William Scot, who assumed the surname of Blair, and continued to reside at Blair in Ayrshire. In Perthshire, the Blairs of Balthyock may have descended from a younger son of the Ayrshire knights, and Thomas Blair, the second of Balthyock, received a charter of the lands of Ardblair, Baldowie, and Balgillo in Forfarshire in 1399. The direct line of Balthyock ended in the 18th century, but the family of Blair-Oliphant still resides in Ardblair Castle near Blairgowrie.

Clan Blair’s legacy extends beyond their ancient origins and the lands they held. Colonel Frederick Blair of Blair was decorated for bravery during World War I and was an aide-de-camp to King George V. Pitcairn’s Criminal Trails of Scotland notes that in 1545, John Blair and his son Patrick were required to find security for their good behavior after consorting with the enemies of Mary of Guise. This highlights the fact that Clan Blair was not only respected but also influential and sometimes controversial figures in Scottish society.

The Blair name can be found throughout Celtic Scotland, with places such as Blair Atholl and Blairgowrie bearing testament to their impact on the country’s geography. Clan Blair’s rich and storied history is a testament to the family’s legacy, and it serves as a reminder of the important role that clans played in shaping Scotland’s landscape and society.

Clan Blair is a proud and noble clan with a rich and storied history that spans over 800 years. From their origins as a family of Norman knights to their impact on the geography of Scotland, the Blairs have left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire and captivate people today.
