The Scottish Clan Carmichael has a long and fascinating history, dating back almost eight hundred years. The Carmichael family were originally part of the Douglasdale territory, which was granted to the Douglas family by Robert the Bruce in 1321. Over the years, members of the Carmichael family played significant roles in Scottish history, including in battles against the English and in various high offices of state.

One of the most famous members of the Carmichael family is Sir John de Carmichael of Meadowflat, later of Carmichael, who fought in France with the Scottish army sent to aid the French in their resistance against an English invasion. Sir John famously unhorsed the English commander and broke his own spear in the action, causing the demoralized English to flee the field. To commemorate this deed, Carmichaels bear the broken spear as their crest.

The family’s fortunes rose and fell over the centuries, with some members supporting the royalist cause while others sided with Parliament. The third Earl of Hyndford, known as ‘the great Earl,’ was a staunch supporter of the Hanoverians and an agricultural improver. The family titles and honors became dormant in 1817 when the sixth Earl died unmarried, and the great estates of Carmichael passed to Sir John Anstruther of Anstruther, Baronet.

Despite the family titles becoming dormant, the Clan Carmichael continues to be a vibrant and active community. The present chief, Richard Carmichael of Carmichael, has worked tirelessly to support the Clan Carmichael Society, which now has branches throughout the world. The society works to preserve and promote the history and culture of the Clan Carmichael, and to foster a sense of community and belonging among its members.

In addition to their history and accomplishments, the Carmichael family and the Clan Carmichael are known for their distinctive tartan. The Carmichael tartan is a striking pattern of blue, green, and black, with thin red and yellow stripes. This tartan is often worn by members of the Clan Carmichael, and is a symbol of their heritage and identity.

The history of the Scottish Clan Carmichael is a rich and fascinating one. From their origins in Douglasdale to their role in battles and high offices of state, to the present-day Clan Carmichael Society, the Carmichael family has left a lasting mark on Scottish history and culture.
