The name Crobie is believed to have originated from the Old English word “cros,” meaning cross. This suggests that the clan’s founders may have been associated with the Christian church in some way, or may have lived near a cross or crossroads. The earliest recorded member of the clan was Iuone de Cosseby, who witnessed a charter by Robert de Brus to Arbroath Abbey in the late 12th century. The name appears in numerous charters in Annandale and Moffat during the late 12th and early 13th centuries.

The clan was based in Wigtownshire and Dumfriesshire in southwestern Scotland, and its members were loyal followers of the Bruce family. The two branches of the clan, the Crosbies of Oulctis and the Crosbies of Holm, were both prominent in their respective areas. Andrew Crosbie of the Holm branch was a celebrated lawyer who practiced at the Scottish Bar in the 18th century, and was the model for a character in Sir Walter Scott’s novel, Guy Mannering.

Despite its relatively small size, Clan Crobie has had a significant impact on Scottish society over the years. Its members have been involved in a range of fields, from law and politics to the arts and sciences. The clan’s motto, “Recta spero” (I hope for the right), reflects its members’ commitment to justice and fairness.

Today, the clan is relatively small, and its members are spread out around the world. However, there are still active Clan Crobie societies in Scotland and abroad, and the clan continues to be a source of pride for those who bear its name. Whether you are a member of Clan Crobie or simply interested in Scottish history and culture, the clan’s rich history and legacy are worth exploring.
