The first recording of the Falconer name is Ranulph, son of Walter, who was a falconer to William the Lion around 1200. The Falconer family received lands in the Mearns, which were named Hawkerton, as a reference to their office. The family prospered and acquired lands at Newton and Balendro.
In the seventeenth century, the Falconer family achieved particular prominence. Sir David Falconer of Newton was appointed Lord President of the Court of Session in Edinburgh in 1682, while Sir Alexander Falconer of Halkertoun was appointed a judge of the Court of Session and took the title of ‘Lord Halkertoun’.
