The Scottish Clan Grey, also known as Clan Gray or Clan Griogair in Gaelic, has a rich and varied history that spans several centuries. The clan is believed to have originated in Normandy, France, and migrated to Scotland in the 11th century.
The first recorded member of the clan was Fulbert, who served as the Chamberlain of Robert, Duke of Normandy. Fulbert was granted the castle and lands of Croy or Gray in Picardy, which he then adopted as the family name. His daughter, Arlotta, is rumored to have been the mother of William the Conqueror. |

In Scotland, the clan quickly rose to prominence, and several members held important positions in the country’s government and military. One of the most famous members of the clan was Sir Andrew Gray, who helped to capture Edinburgh Castle from the English in 1312. Sir Andrew was rewarded for his service with several grants of land, including Longforgen in Perthshire.
Another notable member of the clan was Patrick, Master of Gray, who served as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to James II. Patrick was involved in a number of political intrigues, including the death of Mary, Queen of Scots. Despite being tried for treason, Patrick’s life was spared thanks to the intervention of the Earl of Huntly and Lord Hamilton. He was eventually exiled from Scotland. The clan continued to play an important role in Scottish politics and society throughout the centuries. In the 17th century, the eighth Lord Gray was excommunicated by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for his Catholicism. The title of Lord Gray was eventually passed down to Eveleen, Baroness Gray, who inherited it from her uncle, the 14th Earl of Moray. Today, the clan continues to exist, with many descendants of the original clan members living all over the world. While the clan’s power and influence may have diminished over time, its legacy lives on in the many individuals who proudly bear the name Gray. |
