Let’s dive into the captivating history of the Clan Henderson and explore the diverse origins that shaped this renowned Scottish clan.

The Hendersons of the Borders region were known as the “sons of Henry” or Henryson. Though not a powerful force, they were considered a riding clan, with figures like William Henderson, the chamberlain of Lochmaben Castle, involved in local affairs.

In Dumfriesshire, the Henderson family extended their influence into Liddesdale. While they were not named among the border clans listed by Parliament in 1594, they produced notable individuals like James Henderson, who became Lord Advocate and acquired the lands of Fordell in Fife.

The Glencoe branch of the Hendersons traced their roots back to the legendary Pictish prince Eanruig Mor MacRigh Neachtain, or “big Henry son of King Neachtain.” Although their individual identity merged with the Macdonald chiefs of Glencoe through intermarriage, the Hendersons retained an important role as the chief’s bodyguard. Tragically, some Hendersons lost their lives during the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692.

In Caithness, the Hendersons emerged from a different source. They were connected to Clan Gunn, with Hendry, one of the younger sons, forming his own gilfine or sept, adopting the Henderson name. These Caithness Hendersons or Mackendricks had connections to the hereditary crowners of Caithness.

The Clan Henderson’s legacy exemplifies Scottish resilience and the spirit of kinship. From their modest beginnings to their involvement in politics, law, and astronomy, the Hendersons have made lasting contributions. Today, their descendants honor their heritage and preserve the proud traditions that define the Clan Henderson, keeping alive the spirit of their ancestors
