Branches of Clan Colquhoun

Colquhoun of Luss

The primary branch of Clan Colquhoun, the Colquhouns of Luss, established their seat at Luss on the western shore of Loch Lomond. This prominence began around 1368 when Sir Robert Colquhoun married the heiress of the Luss estate, integrating these lands into the clan’s holdings. The chiefs of this branch played significant roles in Scottish history, including Sir John Colquhoun, who served as Governor of Dumbarton Castle during King James II’s minority and was tragically killed in 1439 during a raid on Inchmurrin. The Luss estate remains central to the clan’s heritage, with Rossdhu House serving as the family seat.plaidwerx.com+3Wikipedia+3Scots Connection+3

Colquhoun of Tillyquhoun

A notable cadet branch, the Colquhouns of Tillyquhoun, asserted themselves as baronets until their line became extinct in 1838. This branch highlights the complex succession and inheritance patterns within the clan, especially concerning the baronetcy titles.Wikipedia

Colquhoun of Camstradden

Established in 1395 by a younger son of the Luss line, the Colquhouns of Camstradden held lands adjacent to the primary family estate. The sixth Laird of Camstradden gained renown as a knight who fought valiantly at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547, underscoring the martial tradition of this branch.Wikipedia

Obscure or Nonactive Branches

Colquhoun of Dumbuck

This branch originated from lands granted to Umphredus de Kilpatrick by the Earl of Lennox during King Alexander II’s reign. While significant in the early expansion of Clan Colquhoun’s territories, the Dumbuck line has faded from prominence over the centuries.Tartans+3plaidwerx.com+3Wikipedia+3

Colquhoun of Auchentorily

Also stemming from the grants to Umphredus de Kilpatrick, the Auchentorily branch played a role in the clan’s early history. However, like the Dumbuck line, it has become obscure over time, with limited historical records detailing its activities.
