Clan Campbell

Clan Campbell Scottish MapClan Campbell is a highland Scottish clan originating in the Argyll district of Scotland.  The earliest recording of the Campbell family was from 1260 when Gilleasbaig of Menstrie appeared in a royal charter.  The first chief of the clan is believed to be Sir Duncan of Lochawe, he was granted the title of Lord Campbell in 1445 by James II as a reward for his loyalty to the regent.

The clan’s motto is Ne Obliviscaris, which is latin for Forget Not.  The Clan Crest features a  boar’s head erased fessways erased Or, armed Argent, langued Gules.

Clan Campbell CrestThe historic seat of Clan Campbell is Castle Campbell, located in Clackmannanshire.  The castle was aquired by the Campbells in the 15th century through marriage.  The castle was abandoned in the 18th century and was eventually sold .  It is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland.  The current seat of the clan is Inveraray Castle located near Inveraray.  It was build in 1743 and is open to the public.

The Campbell Clan greatly increased their power and land in the early 14th century by supporting Robert the Bruce in the Scottish war of independence.  They were rewarded with lands  that were seized from the MacDougalls.

The Campbell Clan supported the English Crown during the Jacobite revolt in the 18th century.  It is believed that the Campbell clan was able to supply 5000 men to help the crown.  The Campbell’s provided 8 companies of men at the Battle of Culloden where the Jacobites were finally defeated.

There are branches of the Clan Campbell society in North America, New Zealand and Austraila.  The Clan Campbell Society in North America was founded as the Clan Campbell Association of America in 1929.
