Clan Wood

Clan Wood MapClan wood is a lowland Scottish Clan originating in the fife region.  The surname Wood originated from an old English term wudu used to describe a person who worked in the woods or forest.  The first mention of the Clan’s name is in the 12th century when Williemus de Bosco (which translates into Wood) was listed as chancellor of Scotland to King William the Lion.  The progenator of the clan is considered to be Sir Andrew Wood of Largo.  Sir Andrew was born in the 15th century and was a direct decendant of Williemus de Bosco.  Andrew was granted lands in Largo by James III of Scotland after he protected Scotland’s interests in several naval battles.

Clan Wood CrestThe motto of clan wood is Tutus in Undis which translates to “safe on the Waves” and the clan’s crest features a sailing ship.

The historic seat of the clan is Largo Castle located in Upper Largo, Fife.  The Castle was started in 1491 by the clan and was replaced by a house in the 17 hundreds.  The only remaining structure of the old castle is a round tower, often referred to as Sir Andrew’s tower.  The remains of the castle have been declared a monument of national historic importance by Historic Environment Scotland.
