Clan Guthrie

Guthrie MapClan Guthrie is a highland Scottish Clan originating in the Angus district of Scotland. The surname Guthrie was derived from the place name Guthrie in Angus, Scotland. It is the English translation of the Gaelic word goathair which means windy place. It is believed that the Guthries were instrumental in the Scottish civil war supporting William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in their battles against the English. The Guthrie’s acquired their lands of Kincaldrum in the 15th century.

Clan Guthrie CrestThe motto of the clan is Sto Pro Veritate which translates into “I stand on account of truth”, and the clan’s crest features a bent arm holding a sword.

The historic seat of the clan is Guthrie Castle located in the village of Guthrie, Angus. The castle was built in the 15th century by Sir David Guthrie who at the time was the Treasurer and Lord Justice of Scotland. The castle was owned by the Guthrie Clan until 1983 when it was sold to an American business man. The Castle is closed to the public. Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Guthrie was the last chief to reside at the Castle.

Clan Guthrie has recently been left without a chief when Alexander Ivan Bedini Guthrie sadly passed away at the age of 52 from coronavirus. He died in London on March 23rd, 2020 without an heir.

The Clan Guthrie society is a nonprofit organization that claims to have a membership of 400 Guthrie families from all over the world. The goal of the organization is to preserve and promote the common heritage of the clan members.
