Guthrie Castle, located near Guthrie Junction in Scotland, is a remarkable example of a castle built in the 15th century that has been preserved until this day. Built in 1468 by Sir David Guthrie, it is still owned and maintained by his descendants, the current proprietors. The tower is 40 feet by 31 feet and has walls that are 5 to 6 feet thick, except for the entrance door which is 8 feet thick to contain the staircase. The ground floor contains two cellars, with doors opposite the entrance door. The upper floors were accessed by a wheelstair in a tower projecting from one angle. Each floor contained an apartment that was 28 feet by 20 feet. The castle has been restored and a boldlycorbelled parapet has been added in modern times. The castle has had a long and interesting history. In the late 15th century, Sir David Guthrie built the castle as a stronghold for his family. It served as a base for King James IV of Scotland during the AngloScottish Wars and later as continue a base for the English forces during the Jacobite Rising of 1715. In the 18th century, the castle became a popular meeting place for the educated elite of Scotland and was frequently visited by the great Scottish philosopher and historian, David Hume. During the 19th century, the castle was used as a family home and served as a backdrop for many grand events, such as the wedding of the Marquess of Breadalbane in 1845. In the 20th century, the castle was used as a filming location for a number of movies and television shows. Most recently, it was used as a set for the BBC drama series, Outlander. Today, Guthrie Castle is an important historical landmark and a popular tourist destination.
