Trinity Temple
Teampull Na Trianaid or Trinity Temple, located at Carinish, Isle of Uist in the outer Hebrides, Scotland
Is a Medieval monastery and college of European significance, founded by Beathag, a Black Nun and the daughter of Somhairle or Somerled, a mid-12th-century Norse-Gaelic lord . It was enlarged in about 1390 by Amie nic Ruari, the first wife of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles, after their divorce and became what many believe to be the oldest University in Scotland.
Trinity Temple was reconstructed in the 16th century by Dotair Ban but destroyed after the Scottish Reformation during a time when the lands of the temple were in dispute between the Catholic Church and the local land owners. The Battle of Carinish, which was fought between the Clan MacDonald of Sleat and Clan MacLeod of Dunvegan, took place near the ruins of the temple in 1601.
