Tantallon Castle
Tantallon Castle is a ruined medieval castle located in Scotland, on a promontory overlooking the Firth of Forth. It was built in the mid-14th century by William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, and remained in the possession of his descendants, the Douglases, for much of its history. The castle consists of a single wall blocking off the promontory, with the other three sides protected by sea cliffs. It saw action in several conflicts, including the First Bishops’ War in 1639 and Oliver Cromwell’s invasion of Scotland in 1651, and was severely damaged in both instances. Today, the ruin is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
