According to legend, the Allardice family takes its name from the lands of Allrethis, which were granted to the family by King William the Lion. This land, located near the parish of Arbuthnott in Kincardineshire, would become the ancient barony of Allardice and would serve as the family’s ancestral home for generations to come.

One of the most notable members of the Allardice family was Sir James Allardice, who served as the Clerk of the King’s Treasury and Archdeacon of Moray during the reign of King James III. This high-ranking position in the royal court demonstrates the prestige and influence that the Allardice family held in medieval Scotland.

In 1662, Sir John Allardice of that Ilk married Mary, the sister of the Earl of Menteith, further solidifying the family’s position as one of the most prominent clans in Scotland. This line of the Allardice family would eventually come to an end with the marriage of Sarah Allan and Robert Barclay of Urie in 1776, but the family’s legacy lived on through their descendants.

One of those descendants was Margaret Barclay Allardice, who, in 1883, claimed the earldoms of Strathearn, Montheith and Airth as the last of the line descended from Prince David, son of Robert II. She took the name and arms of Barclay-Allardice by royal license, and the family continued to prosper and take up residence in England. Today, the present-day successors to the Allardice line use the name Barclay alone.
