The origins of the Glen Clan can be traced back to the Glen at Innerleithen, next door to the Royal Hunting Lodge at Traquair, which is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland. The Glen family were early landowners in the region and were granted lands in the Sheriffdom of Peebles in the 14th century.

One of the notable figures in the history of the Glen Clan was Colban del Glen, who received a legacy from Queen Elizabeth (de Burgh), wife of Robert I, in 1328. He was granted the lands of Quilte in the Sheriffdom of Peebles and built the original castle on the site where the current Glen House stands today. The Glen House is now owned by the Tennant family, one of Scotland’s most colorful dynasties.

Throughout the Middle Ages, members of the Glen Clan were signatories of various charters and land transactions, and the Glen surname is found widely throughout Scotland. The surname is most prevalent in Angus, Dundee City, Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, Dunbartonshire, Edinburgh City, and the Lothians.

In more recent history, the Glen Clan has produced some notable figures, including John Glenn, an American astronaut who orbited the Earth in the NASA Spacecraft “Friendship 7” in 1962. He was a descendant of Thomas de Glen, who was granted safe conduct to travel to England in 1422.

Today, the Glen Clan continues to have a presence in Scotland and around the world, with many individuals proud of their Scottish heritage and their connection to the lands of Peeblesshire. The Glen House, which is now a beautiful castellated mansion in the Scots Baronial Style, is available for corporate events, film and fashion shoots, holidays, and home rentals, providing a glimpse into the history and culture of the Glen Clan.
