According to tradition and myth, the MacAlpines claim to be the purest Celtic clan among the Highland Scottish clans. Their ancestry is believed to be rooted in the renowned Kenneth MacAlpin, a pivotal figure who united the Picts and Scots in the year 850, forming a single kingdom. Kenneth MacAlpin’s significance in Scottish history cannot be overstated, as he moved the capital from Perthshire to Dunadd near Loch Crinan in Dál Riata.

From Dunadd to Dunstaffnage: Dunadd, an ancient hill-fort located near Lochgilphead, Argyll, holds immense historical importance for the MacAlpines. It is said to have been the stronghold of Kenneth MacAlpin, and the former chiefs of the clan resided in lands that now encompass Dunstaffnage Castle. This majestic castle, once an early capital of Kenneth MacAlpin, stands proudly as a testament to the clan’s historical ties.

The name MacAlpine, or MacAlpin, carries deep symbolic significance for the Scottish people. It represents a connection to their early roots and a shared heritage. As a result, several unrelated clans, including the MacNabs, Mackinnons, Grants, and MacAulays, laid claim to descent from Kenneth MacAlpin. These clans formed what is known as Siol Alpine, meaning the “Race of Alpine,” embracing the legacy of this legendary figure.

Despite not having a recognized Hereditary Chief by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the MacAlpine clan took matters into their own hands. In 2016, a Family Convention was held at Abbotsford House, the home of the esteemed Sir Walter Scott. The convention saw the selection and recommendation of Michael Todd McAlpin Senior for the role of Commander. This recommendation led to Michael receiving his Commission as the Commander of MacAlpine from Dr. Joseph Morrow, the Lord Lyon, in 2017.

With Michael Todd McAlpin Senior assuming the role of Commander, the MacAlpine clan continues to honor its heritage and preserve its legacy. The Commander is empowered to carry out the necessary duties and functions of leadership until a Chief is officially named. Through their determination and unity, the MacAlpines safeguard their ancestral traditions, ensuring that the history of their clan lives on for generations to come.
